The birth of the modern spa can be traced back to 1968 when Roy Jacuzzi invented the whirlpool bath, also known as the "custom line Roman bath." Just two years later, he developed the first portable spa which featured a simple square design, a plastic tub and just one type of jet.
In the early 1970s, Northern Californians started a whole new craze. They bought used redwood wine vats and installed heaters, plumbing and jets to create the "hot tub." When the wine vat supply dried up, and the demand for "hot tubs" grew, manufacturers began using more exotic wood, such as teak and mahogany.
Today's spas have come a long way. With improved surfaces made of attractive and durable materials, such as Lucite® XL cast acrylic, they offer head-to-toe hydrotherapy with multiple jets for the back, neck and feet; innovative massage capabilities; unique shapes and sizes; plus, an overwhelming selection of colors. Owning a spa is like having a private getaway at home. Perfect for relieving stress, soothing sore muscles, relaxing, entertaining and spending quality time with family, spas are often more affordable than people think and easy to install and maintain.
