Technology: The Great Equalizer For Working Women


If you think women are afraid of computers, think again. In fact, women are using technology to compete successfully with men in the workplace, according to a national survey commissioned by Avon Products, Inc.

The survey showed a direct correlation between technological savvy and earning power-with 80 percent of working women citing technology as the key factor contributing to their higher salaries. Less than one third (28 percent) said they are intimidated by technology.

Other survey findings include:

  • 80 percent of working women view their technological know-how as their entree into traditionally male-dominated fields.

  • 75 percent say their familiarity with technology has helped them advance in their jobs.

  • 79 percent believe it's impossible to advance in the job market if you don't know how to use technology.

The explosive power of technology -- and its impact on women entrepreneurs -- was underscored at Avon's 1997 Women of Enterprise Awards event in New York City.
