Cataracts, which impair more than three million of us, and glaucoma, which is diagnosed in 95,000 new patients each year, probably sound a lot more familiar than presbyopia. Presbyopia, a condition caused by the hardening of the lens, may not be a regular part of your vocabulary, but 75 million Americans over age 40 recognize its symptoms. Presbyopes may:
- Wish for longer arms as they strain to see the print while reading newspapers.
- Confuse small, printed numbers such as 3 and 8.
- Have trouble focusing on small items such as price tags and wristwatches.
Presbyopes should take comfort in the fact that they are not alone. The condition is a natural, easily correctable part of aging and can be corrected with contact, progressive or bifocal lenses and reading glasses.
