How To Remove "Back-To-School" Stains

When children head off to school to learn the "Three Rs"-reading, writing and 'rithmetic they often come home with the three "Gs" -- gross, grimy, ground-in dirt.

According to Julie Bundy, Maytag's manager of consumer information, "With kids back in school and participating in outdoor activities, they return home with stubborn stains that need to be taken care of. These spots can be removed easily if you follow the three Ps-promptness, patience, and persistence."

  • Promptness: Whatever the stain, treat it as quickly as possible.

  • Patience: Think about your wardrobe investment, spend a little extra time and effort to remove the spot.

  • Persistence: Some stains are stubborn so it may be necessary to repeat the procedure.

Successful Stain Removal

  1. Air dry items to be certain the stain has been removed. Machine drying makes the stains more difficult to remove.

  2. Any material on which you have used a cleaning solvent should not be placed in the washer or dryer until all traces of it have been removed.

  3. Do not mix or combine stain removal products, especially ammonia and chlorine bleach; noxious fumes may result.

  4. Chlorine bleach is the most effective stain remover and may be used on all fabrics except silk, wool, spandex, and non-colorfast fabrics. Non-chlorine bleach, sometimes called all-fabric bleach, may be used on all fabrics and colors, but isn't as strong as chlorine. Carefully read instructions on the label before using.
