At least that's the thinking behind a new product the goal of which is to teach children how to "learn to earn." The Allowance CalculatorŠ comes as part of a financial learning system manufactured by TBSC Learning Systems, Inc. The product was developed by a Michigan father and stockbroker who wanted to teach his sons the connection between effort and reward. The system is geared toward encouraging children to be a contributing and cooperative part of the family unit, as well as teaching them important money skills.

Through the system, children can earn money daily for assigned tasks, but can lose money for not following household rules. As an incentive to seek opportunity and keep on track, goal setting is incorporated as an important part of the system.

Included in the kit is a magnetized 8 1/2 x 11-inch reusable chart, a Goal Reminder Sheet on which to place a picture of the goal and a children's checkbook with register and deposit slips. With a little help, the children total up weekly earnings, write deposit slips, balance the register and write checks to mom or dad to cash in on earnings.

The system is made to be individualized to each child. Using the write-on/wipe-off chart, parents can sit down with children and discuss what they feel each item on the board is worth. The agreed upon amount is then assigned to each task. By predefining what needs to be done and placing the Allowance Calculator and the Goal Reminder Sheet on the refrigerator, children are constantly reminded of what they are saving for and how they can achieve their goal. A smoother running and more organized household can be a welcome byproduct of the system.
