In 1996, over 2.5 million children celebrated a fiftieth birthday. Not their own, of course, but that of Highlights for Children magazine.Highlights, a magazine which sums up its motto as "fun with a purpose" has delighted children ever since its founding in 1946. Founders Garry Cleveland Myers, Ph.D., and his wife, Caroline Clark Myers, believed strongly that children are led and encouraged to do well by positive suggestion. Highlights stories and articles do not "teach" or "preach" but embody time-tested values of fairness, honesty, and regard for others.
The magazine's popular departments are as well loved by children today as they were by their parents. Some of the most famous and imitated features are:
* Hidden Pictures, in which children find little drawings hidden in a full-page one.
* Goofus and Gallant in which twins offer examples of the right and wrong way to behave.
* Two pages of "You Can Make It!" things to make in every issue.
Aimed at children, 2 to 12, the multi-leveled magazine offers puzzles and poetry, riddles, jokes, cartoons, science articles, and a variety of short stories. Since different ages appreciate different aspects of the magazine, many children have grown up with Highlights. For subscription information, call 800-255-9517.(NAPSI)
