The Most Important Change You'll Make All Year:
Did You Change Your Battery When You Changed Your Clock?

Autumn means a welcome chill to the air and leaves turning brilliant red, yellow and orange. But this picturesque time of year also brings with it the ominous beginning of home fire season. As the need for furnaces and space heaters increases and holiday lights come out of storage, the number of home fires rises dramatically, and with that an increase in fire injury and deaths. More than half of those harmed are children.

Tragic home fire facts have spurred the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and Energizer® brand Batteries into action. This year, they are issuing a challenge that no one die in a home fire due to a non-working smoke alarm.

Since 1989, the IAFC and Energizer have sponsored "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery," a home fire safety program that promotes a simple, lifesaving message: Each fall, when you change your clock back to standard time, remember to also change the batteries in your smoke alarm. Consider the facts:

  • Every day an average of three children die in home fires.

  • Fire is the second leading cause of accidental deaths among children under age five.

  • Although 92 percent of American homes contain smoke alarms, one out of every three of those alarms does not work due to worn or missing batteries.

  • A working smoke alarm almost doubles your chance of surviving a home fire.

"Residential fires occur every 66 seconds in this country. Almost 90 percent of fire deaths involving children occur in homes without working smoke alarms," said Lamont Ewell of the IAFC. "Across the country, more than 5,000 local fire departments participate in the "Change" program to educate their communities about the importance of regular smoke alarm maintenance.(NAPSI)
