Autumn means a welcome chill to the air and leaves turning brilliant red, yellow and orange. But this picturesque time of year also brings with it the ominous beginning of home fire season. As the need for furnaces and space heaters increases and holiday lights come out of storage, the number of home fires rises dramatically, and with that an increase in fire injury and deaths. More than half of those harmed are children. Tragic home fire facts have spurred the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and Energizer® brand Batteries into action. This year, they are issuing a challenge that no one die in a home fire due to a non-working smoke alarm. Since 1989, the IAFC and Energizer have sponsored "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery," a home fire safety program that promotes a simple, lifesaving message: Each fall, when you change your clock back to standard time, remember to also change the batteries in your smoke alarm.
