Simple Tips For Surviving The Holidays

The holiday season can be the most stressful time of the year, causing many people to trade a healthy lifestyle for an unhealthy one. It's a time when calorie consumption soars and exercise regimens hibernate, creating a difficult environment for anyone trying to manage his or her weight. On average, most people gain from five to ten pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

With more than a third of all American adults already overweight, it's more important than ever to maintain healthy habits during the holidays. That's why weight management expert Jenny Craig is sharing some of her best kept secrets in her new book, Jenny Craig's Little Survival Guide: 201 tips for managing your weight and your life. Among her favorite tips for surviving the holidays:

  • Make your home "safe" during the holidays by keeping fattening goodies out of sight (and to a minimum) and donating unwanted food items to charity.

  • Bake your dressing alongside, instead of in, your turkey. You'll save fat without sacrificing flavor.

  • Instead of heavy sauces or gravies, try fruit juices, salsas, pureed vegetables, broth, wine...or season with herbs and spices.

  • Having trouble finding time to exercise? Break up your routine into "mini-workouts" and accumulate your exercise throughout the day!

  • Reward yourself...often. Take a bubble bath, get a massage, or go shopping-whatever makes you feel good!

  • Stressed? Try a brisk walk around the block. It'll calm you down and lift your spirits.

  • When making flight reservations, ask the airline about special meal options like low-fat or vegetarian entrŽes, fruit plates, or seafood platters.

  • When socializing, make friends and family members your focus-not food. Holiday events are "people events"-not "eating events."

  • Looking for a low-fat dessert? Try angel food cake or fat-free pound cake topped with seasonal fruit.

  • To add some color to your holiday table, try serving a low-fat dip in scooped-out red and green bell peppers.

  • During the hectic holiday season, take five minutes each day just for yourself.

These simple, yet effective, tips can help keep you on track during the tempting holiday season. For more information on Jenny Craig's Little Survival Guide or to learn more about weight management, call toll-free 1-800-43-JENNY.(NAPSI)
