Special Gift Wraps

This holiday season why not make your gift even more special by creating your own gift wrap and gift bags. "According to HIA's Nationwide Consumer Study, 79 percent of crafters give their completed projects as gifts," explained Susan Brandt, assistant executive director and director of communications for HIA (Hobby Industry Association). "And many crafters take it one step further by using their favorite tools-rubber stamps, paint, even colored glue-to create beautiful wrapping paper and gift bags as well."

Consider these handmade holiday giftwrap suggestions from HIA and Rubber Stampede.

  • Decorate plain brown shipping paper with colorful images. For small gifts you can use parts of supermarket brown bags.

  • Use holiday-themed stencils, rubber stamps or stickers to decorate solid-colored wrapping paper or jazz up plain kraft bags.

  • Top gifts with extra unused tinsel from the tree.

  • Cover gifts with leftover fabric and attach coordinating ribbon.

  • Tie a bow out of red or green raffia ribbon and attach to gift bag handles.

  • Add holly or berry sprigs to the tops of packages.

  • Use sparkle embossing powders over rubber stamped images on giftwrap.

  • Decoupage cardboard boxes with photographs from past holidays, images from magazines, catalogs or greeting cards.

  • Make gift tags by cutting up old holiday cards, folding them and writing your message on the blank side.
