Valvoline Reminds Motorists To "Weather-Proof" Vehicles For Winter

Bone-chilling temperatures, gusting northerly winds and icy, snow-covered roads can spell disaster for the unprepared motorist. That's why it's so important to take steps now to "weather-proof" vehicles for the upcoming winter season.

The National Weather Service is calling for near-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation for most of the United States through the end of December. Portions of the midwest are the exception to the rule with below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation expected.

"Winter weather can put a tremendous strain on vehicles, especially those that haven't been properly maintained," said Norm Hudecki, Valvoline's director of technical services. "As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that couldn't be more true when it comes to vehicle maintenance and the winter weather season."

Valvoline experts say simple routine maintenance and the use of quality products can better prepare motorists for winter driving. Drivers should be sure to have the following checked before winter arrives:

  • Antifreeze: The onset of winter is the perfect time to flush the radiator and refill it with a 50-50 mixture of water and a top-quality antifreeze like Zerex. Zerex uses a unique corrosion inhibitor and prevents cold weather freeze-ups. Belts, hoses and all clamps should be checked as well.

  • Engine Oil: Nothing protects an engine better in cold weather than routinely changing the oil and replacing it with a high performance oil like DuraBlend. DuraBlend, the No. 1 selling semi-synthetic motor oil in the country, is designed to provide better wear and cold-starting protection and deposit control for cleaner engines. All other fluids should be checked routinely as well.

  • Battery: A fully-charged battery is the best way to ensure starting when the mercury drops. A battery is 100 percent effective when the temperature is 80 degrees, but that same battery is only 40 percent as efficient when the temperature reaches zero.

  • Tires: Proper tire inflation is essential, especially during the winter months when cold weather can deflate the air in a tire. Tires also should have sufficient tread and be rotated so they don't wear unevenly.

  • Brakes: In addition to tires, brakes should also be thoroughly inspected for the winter driving months with the possibility of ice and snow.

Valvoline is also urging motorists to prepare winter driving kits that contain extra clothing, blankets, flares, a shovel, a bag of sand, jumper cables and a quality emergency tire inflator/sealer such as The Pump, which offers the only no-freeze formula on the market. In addition, motorists should always keep their gas tanks at least half-full, and as always, follow the owner's manual for vehicle maintenance schedules.
