Adult Institute for Independent Living

A not-for-profit organization funded by the Catholic Church, has taught work and living skills to people with disabilities and placed them with various companies, including Exxon and Chili's Restaurant, since 1986. The organization will soon become part of the MHMR system, said Vanessa Bridges of the Adult Institute.

Meets at 9:30am to noon on Saturdays. Cost is $7.00 per session. An educational series and support group for Hispanic, chemically dependent individuals and their families.

Houston Center for Independent Living

Marbridge House

Helps place men with mild mental challenges in jobs with restaurants and hotels.

Minors in Possession

Meets Monday evenings Galveston and Clear Lake offices of the Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol. A six hour educational program designed for minors who have been issued a citation for misdemeanor possession of alcohol. Cost is $25.00 per person.

Nightingale Service

Since 1987 has helped train, counsel and place people with disabilities in jobs around Houston. The employment service- as well as a substance abuse program- grew out of a home nursing business, started in 1979. Home nurses and physical therapists help people with disabilities in finding employment.

Texas Employment Commission Disabled Workers Program

Helps people with disabilities find jobs, but the TEC also has a Disabled Workers Program, run by Patricia Garland .

Texas Rehabilitation Commission

Employs an American Disabilities Act coordinator.
