Now They're Cooking

In view of today's busy schedules, even an hour or two shared with younger children can be precious. One idea that's both fun and productive -- for boys as well as girls -- involves teaching them to prepare simple foods they'll enjoy eating while reinforcing good nutritional habits.

Since kids love Jarlsberg -- the mellow-nutty classic and equally delicious, 50 percent reduced fat Jarlsberg Lite -- this versatile cheese makes an ideal building block for many quick, wholesome treats. Try substituting it for (high fat) Cheddar in their favorite fajitasÉshred on easy tortilla chip nachos using lean ground beef, taco seasoning mix, yogurt instead of sour cream.

Warm a flour tortilla in the microwave, tuck in scrambled eggs plus a slice of Jarlsberg and roll up in foil for a protein-rich "walking breakfast."

Dress up plain soup by floating bread/cheese "stars" or "bears," shaped with cookie cutters, on top. Turn tuna sandwiches into special "boats" with hot dog buns and Jarlsberg "sails."

If Mom's called away, let older siblings help supervise -- and help gobble the results. (NAPSI)
